Full Description

A fine French patinated bronze sculpture comprised of two buoyant, jubilant dancers and a satyr pictured in Bacchic revelry. Both female figures wear flowing tunics with masses of fine drapery folds. One young bacchante upholds a tambourine, while the other feeds the satyr with bunches of grapes. The grapes are an attribute of the Greek god of wine, Bacchus. The naturalistic base is scattered with grape vines and a flute, the signature reads 'Clodion 1762' and '2231'. The sculpture is based on a model by Claude Michel (1738-1814). Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was a French sculptor in the Rococo style, especially noted for his works in marble and terracotta. His skill of combining and intertwining a variety of elements in a tight composition married with a high degree of finish and detail lead to success: he became highly sought after by members of the elite European nobility and royalty. Clodion continued to work until his death in 1814.
