This exceptional matched pair of 19th-century Meissen porcelain elephants vividly capturing the historical moment of Alexander the Great’s conquest of India. Each elephant is beautifully adorned, showcasing the intricate craftsmanship synonymous with Meissen, renowned for its fine porcelain artistry.
The figures depict Alexander’s warriors, clad in exquisite armour and wielding weapons, riding atop the elaborately decorated elephants. One elephant, a striking white, contrasts elegantly with the darker hue of the other, creating a stunning visual dynamic. The riders exhibit a range of expressions, from fierce determination to strategic contemplation, bringing the scene to life.
The caparisoned elephants are intricately detailed, featuring vibrant colours and intricate patterns that reflect the opulence of the era. The use of pink rope-twist borders and elaborate floral motifs enhances their regal appearance. Additionally, the craftsmanship includes distinct features such as the soldiers’ helmets and shields, symbolising their readiness for battle.
These pieces not only represent a historical narrative but also embody the artistic excellence of the Meissen factory, marked by the blue crossed swords underglaze mark.
Such a pair is exceedingly rare, making it a remarkable find for collectors and enthusiasts alike. This set offers a fascinating glimpse into the blend of history and artistry characteristic of 19th-century European porcelain.
